This is brilliantly written and is something I am aware of ever since my son took his first steps....thus begins his toddler years and ends his baby years. Sigh my husband doesn't get why these milestones sometimes reduce me to a tearful puddle:-)

There are always first and last. My my baby Isaac went to kindergraden today. That is a 1st for him but a last for me. As parents we want to see our kids grow, But with that comes no more Mother's day tea, no more peanut butter finger prints on the walls, no more needing my help with little things, just big boy stuff , like learning to read. so as sad is lasts is , first are good too

Just the other day I caught myself doing a very silly thing. I rubbed the head of my son who has four children of his own! I do not know why I did such a thing, but it was an approval kind of sign given with much affection and love. After I realized I had done such a thing I whispered in his ear, " I guess you will always be my son." He looked at me and said," its okay mom, and oh yes, you are and will always be Mom! " I guess the point of this story is that our roles really never end, we just add more. We become mother in laws, aunts and grandparents, and we share stories about the earlier times when our children were just kids. Sometimes our kids look at us as if to say why must you divulge such things? But then I think back at the stories my parents told of our earlier lives and realize there is hope in that, an example that maybe the grandkids can learn from. That although we lived in a time different from the present we share much the same lives. And so it goes......

lot of sighing going on! : ) this is the thing I find as well--it seems just about the time I find an equilibrium, things change again. The nature of life, I suppose. You'd think after a lifetime of change (and some radical ones) I'd be used to it by now or could make the transition without a ton of whining and ice cream!! (choc helps too)

sigh...it's hard. I don't like change..and esp. 'lasts'. It always takes me quite awhile to find a new equilibrium. I have some days when I realize parenting is never over, and I am overwhelmed - but I don't want it to ever be over either....sigh.

Sounds like a woman after my own heart, as I sit here in stunningly beautiful Cartagena, Colombia. My 17 year-old son is in the other room re-packing for the short taxi ride over to the apartment of the family he will be living with for 4 months. He is here to study Spanish the only way that undertaking should be done - total immersion in the culture, 24/7. Feeling the bittersweetness of my youngest striking off on his own, knowing that when I get home to Canada the house will truly be empty. Yet at the same time knowing that this has been his dream for several years - to return to the land of his birth (he was born with we living in Colombia for 3 years) and explore this aspect of his identity. I'm so glad we have the internet, facebook, Skype, and his newly created blog through which we can vicariously live his adventure.

How wonderful to hear from you Carolyn. Writing/Publishing can be a "lonely" endeavor. It doesn't help that there are so many options with a ton of information thrown in just to confuse the issue further. I saw your friend request on facebook...lets chat there!

Hi, Kim

While surfing the vast internet world of people, I came across you in Facebook. Curious, I followed your web link. The reason for the interest is that I, too, have written a telling novel. I wanted to add you as a "friend," for I am longing to connect with other writers. I thought I would begin a connection with this post. Fast facts: Teacher (high school special education/English); mother (divorced, three kids); composer (closet, only perform in the living room and occasional gatherings); and the latest and greatest: MY NEW NOVEL (copyrights submitted, sending draft into Library of Congress next week). I am at that "scratching my head" phase, and I am looking forward to self-editing and polishing. The problem: loneliness. I don't know where to turn to now with this semi-finished product. I'm not looking to solicit anything from you, but was hoping I could make a first-impression connection. I'd love to talk with a real person, who knows the feeling of starting a project, and seeing it to it's publication resolution.

Hope to hear from you. Have a wonderful adventure!

Hey Kim (and Mike) When I heard you were on a promotional tour I googled to find your trail. Found it with no problem (nothing is hidden in this life anymore). Anyway, both Barb and I were thrilled to see you in action. Kudos for completing the publication...all the best as you share it along the way. Enjoy.

Kim, I'd love to meet you when you come to California. I live in Orange County. Also planning a move to Naples, FL as soon as our house sells. Looks like you'll be in Ontario. Any chance you'll be close to Behler Publications? Good luck with all your events. Sounds exciting.
