I’ve Been Hacked!

by kim on February 10, 2010

Welcome to the new and improved site—still a work in progress! Little over a week ago, Mike was helping me make some changes in Wordpress and we noticed a strange name listed as an “admin member.” When Mike attempted to delete this guy’s name, my site crashed and while my posts were backed up, none of your comments for the past two years were. Unfortunate. Within a day of this happening, someone also gained access to my email (same password) and sent a bunch of spam re: Viagra and suddenly we were receiving all sorts of emails from friends/family inquiring about Viagra on a number of levels: were we recommending its use? And if so, how well did it work? Were we admitting to using? (several emails attempting jokes here at our expense)  We had a good laugh before Mike said, “Make sure to tell everyone it was spam, eh? No problems here, let me tell ya!” Yeah, yeah, yeah. The next thing you know, my email account crashed and for a few tense days I couldn’t access either the site or my main email account.

Now, we’ve gotten things sorted through and changed all my passwords, although I keep forgetting, entering my old passwords, and locking myself out of my own email/site, etc!

I learned my lesson (like 1234 isn’t the greatest password) and have far more voluptuous passwords now. It will require a little more hacking dexterity next time someone wants to mess around in my business. I can’t imagine who does this sort of thing to begin with.

Looking forward to moving on. Thanks for coming along for the ride.
